John ends four years of innovative leadership

JohnBettsWeb082008: John Betts (right) has stood down as chairman of Transforming Norwich after four years in which his innovative and refreshing leadership has brought ‘Churches Together in Greater Norwich’ into the 21st Century, with a whole series of accomplishments.

John was replaced as chairman by former vice-chairman Rev Nicholas Vesey at the organisation’s AGM on Saturday June 7, at Norwich Central Baptist Church.

John said his time had been characterised by a 'wind of change' approach, changing the organisation through the process of 'Transforming Norwich'. This process had become the new descriptive name with new logo, the motto 'Making Norwich a Fine Community' with both Mission and Vision statements. There had been a survey of Christian Social Action, a large conference on Christian Leadership, the City/Church dialogue instituted, the Network Norwich website and Norfolk Street Pastors established and the 'Every Home is Special' development launched, all while maintaining the normal regular activities.

“I commend the Executive who have learned to trust one another and engage in open debate often on deep issues of doctrine and churchmanship,” said John. “I have specially received help from Nicholas and look forward to his time of office as one of great opportunity.”

Nicholas said: “John has served us all in Norwich by bringing us together, and by presenting the church in a more modern way to the City. Transforming Norwich and its logo have been a refreshing new image for Churches Together in Greater Norwich.

He has also transformed the membership from something that we simply paid money towards, so that we could say we belonged, to something which has delivered real value for our yearly subs.

“John has really been a great leader and I am delighted he will be staying on in the capacity of his role as Development officer. John has brought ‘Churches Together in Greater Norwich’ into the 21st Century, and I am delighted to be taking over from him.

“I see my role as building upon what John has put in place. I want to get round as many churches as possible over the next year to find out how we can help you in your ministry and how we can work harder together. I want to commend to you the Every Home is Special programme as I see it as a way we can all get out into the community.

A new Executive was elected to Transforming Norwich at the AGM, they comprise: Nicholas Vesey (St. Augustine’s), Trevor Pimlott (NFLC), Jean & John Easton job share (St Luke’s), Graham Fletcher (Norwich Baptist), Chris Warner (URC), John Betts (New Hope Christian Centre), Richard Capper (Norwich Cathedral), John Dubbey (King’s Community Church); Biddy Collier (Pregnancy Crisis), John Drake (Norfolk YMCA), Jill Gower (Call to Prayer), Eldred Willey (Christian Aid) and co-opted, Mark Tuma (Norwich YFC).
