Aylsham Actvitiy Day 2017 600C

Mini Professors and Tech Café at Aylsham Church

2017: Two community events at Aylsham Parish Church during February gave youngsters and others the opportunity to get technical.

Aylsham Actvitiy Day girl 2017Over 500 people packed into the church on Tuesday February 14 for a Mini-Professors Activity Day.  Science, engineering and technology were the theme of the event as the church was transformed into a laboratory, rocket launching station, a dark room and a construction site!

The day was organised by Mrs Catherine Beane, and built on the success of previous regular activity days held at the church.  Activities included stepping inside a giant bubble, building your own kaleidoscope, experiments with magnetism and rainbows, and launching your own rocket.

There was much enthusiastic feedback from parents:

  •  “What a fantastic morning we all had. Thank you to everyone who put this together, we can't wait for the next one now!"
  • "It was just wonderful, thank you again for another brilliant few hours of great fun activities. Our 5-year-old loved it, as did we! Aylsham Church...you are amazing!"
  • "Fantastic morning, so lovely to see so many people enjoying the activities. Thanks for another brilliant event."

Aylsham Actvitiy Day spag 2017Revd Canon Andrew Beane, Team Rector of Aylsham said "It was brilliant welcoming so many people into church to discover, experiment and explore the amazing world in which we live.  Here in Aylsham we love using the church in creative ways and making sure everyone feels welcomed and valued.  We are enormously thankful to our team of brilliant volunteers who make these days possible."

Ten days earlier, people of all ages came together for a Tech Café and Community Coffee Morning in aid of the Leprosy Mission at the church on Saturday February 4.

Students from Aylsham High School and the church’s own youth group were on hand to give technical advice to people with laptops, mobile phones and tablets. The event was very well attended as people from their 20s through to their 80s turned up to draw on the wisdom of the tech-savvy young people, whilst enjoying a cup of Fairtrade Coffee and delicious homemade cakes.

Revd Jack Branford, Curate of the Aylsham Team of Churches said:
“It was a really fantastic morning; the church was packed with people from all generations who were learning and laughing together. In our contemporary world, which so often seems to be divided starkly along generational lines, it was incredibly heartening to see such fantastic inter-generational cooperation. We are particularly thankful for the young people from Aylsham High School who were a real credit to their school and community in the way they patiently helped so many people.”

Jean St Clair, who attended the event said: “It was a great morning, thank you so much to the young students who helped me to free loads of storage on my iPad and sorted out my Twitter accounts. It was a great idea and the church was really busy.”

The money raised that morning went towards Aylsham Churches’ Leprosy Mission Appeal which has so far helped to raise over £2200 for Purulia Hospital in India.

The event was such a success that the organisers are already planning another Tech Café which will take place soon.
