Norwich churches unite for Palm Sunday worship

Church leaders and Christians from a range of traditions across the Norwich area came together on Palm Sunday to worship and praise God as part of the annual Norfolk and Waveney Churches Together Lenten gathering.

On Palm Sunday (Sunday, April 14), 6pm Chapel Field Road Methodist Church hosted the Norfolk and Waveney Churches Together ecumenical Palm Sunday service. The service was put together by Rev Debbie Caulk, Minister at Chapel Field Road Methodist Church.

Rev Andrew Maguire, Deputy Chair of the East Anglia Methodist District welcomed the gathering with the proclamation, ‘This is the day that the Lord has made’.  The congregation responded ‘We will rejoice and be glad in it’.

The Bishop of Thetford and acting Bishop of Norwich Rt Rev Alan Winton and the Dean of Norwich Cathedral Very Rev Jane Hedges led prayers.

The Bishop of East Anglia Rt Rev Alan Hopes and the Dean of The Cathedral of St John the Baptist Fr David Paul gave the sermon with points to ponder when travelling through Holy Week. David Saunders followed this with a traditional Quaker gathered silence.

Majors Susan and Derek Jones, Divisional Commanders of the Salvation Army led prayers of intercession.

Catherine Howe, the County Ecumenical Officer said: “What a wonderful time together this was!  The church was full of Christians from across the different traditions worshipping and praising God together, then leaving with points to ponder as we journey though Holy Week.  Many of our Church Leaders, or their representatives, took part in this beautiful service. We are indebted to everyone for their participation and to Chapel Field Methodist church for their very warm hospitality and organisation: thank you.”
