Norwich church initiative to tackle food poverty

A Norwich church is aiming to help tackle food poverty for families in Norwich with a new initiative to collect useful items for hungry kids this summer.

For families in food poverty summer holidays are hard with extra mouths to feed, St Peter Mancroft Church is starting an initiative called ‘Six Things Sunday.’

Rev Graham Kirk-Spriggs, curate at St Peter Mancroft said: "We were concerned as a Christian community about those in food poverty over the summer holidays, and thought how can we help? The idea is that people bring in six items of food, one for each week of the summer holidays, to help those in need, and on Sunday 14th July, we’ll gather it all together at our main Sunday service.”

People can bring items to the church, which is open 10-4 Mon-Sat, or come to the service on Sunday July 14 at 10am and give them in then. The foodbank particularly needs long life fruit juice, Tinned meat (ham, chicken in sauce, stewed steak etc), Long life sponge puddings, Cereal bars (they have lots of cereal, Tinned fruit, Deodorant (men and women), Shampoo, Toothpaste, Toothbrushes.

“We’re also hoping to get vouchers for supermarkets, so that the foodbank can buy fresh food for their F.I.S.H initiative, a lunch club for kids during the school holidays. We believe everyone is precious to God, and no one should go hungry, especially children,” said Graham.
