North Sea baptisms for Gorleston church

Sunday July 14 was a special day for Cliff Park Community Church in Gorleston when two of its members were baptised in the sea.

Sue Clitheroe and Tony Wells were briefly immersed in the water by Stuart Hanks and Tony Mallion, with the minister, Rev Mike Simm, leading the short service and joining them in the sea.

The sea conditions were good, and the light rain held off until the end of the beach service.

Back at the church - which meets in Cliff Park Junior School - both Sue and Tony explained to the congregation how their growing Christian faith had made them want to make this very public commitment.

Sue, above, said she had been a church-goer for much of her life but it was only more recently, thanks to the encouragement of her friend, Gina Wilding from Cliff Park, that she had joined Cliff Park Community Church. Since then her commitment to Jesus had grown.

Tony Wells, top, recounted how he had made a commitment as a teenager at a Crusader holiday at St.Ives but had drifted away for many years. A crisis, when it was discovered at the last minute that a big party for his six-year-old daughter had been double booked at a local hall, led to him praying for the first time in years. An eleventh-hour substitute venue at a local church was found and this answer to prayer began his journey back to real faith.
