A group of church members from St Thomas Norwich have found a creative way to highlight and fund the fight against modern slavery in Norwich and Norfolk, by producing a new cookbook ‘Taste of Freedom: Eat Well and Fight Modern Slavery'.

Church members from St Thomas Norwich have collaborated on a new recipe book featuring over 80 main and side dishes, ‘Taste of Freedom, Eat Well and Fight Modern Slavery”, to raise funds for STN Trust as it works to stop slavery in Norwich and Norfolk.

The process of collating recipes started in February and each recipe has now been tested, tweaked, written-up and photographed to create a professionally printed cookbook which is now available for sale.  Priced at £15, all profits from each book sold will be donated to the STN Trust's efforts to fight modern slavery.

The book includes a graphic short story, ‘Ella’s Story’, by Eloise Browne based on real-life rescues of people who have been victims of trafficking and slavery in the Norwich and Norfolk area.

Rachel Holman, one of the STN Cookbook Group members said: "We are really excited as a team to help others learn about modern slavery locally and what can be done to help people like Ella in our story. I was really surprised at the variety of recipes we received and have loved tasting them. There are some cracking dishes in there. It makes a great gift.  My Christmas shopping is sorted!”

Nik Vitkovitch, another member of the STN Cookbook Group, said: “I cooked dishes I’d never have thought of trying, and it was great fun working as a team testing all the recipes. But the best thing is knowing that the book itself will make a difference to victims of modern slavery."

The STN Trust is a charitable organisation linked to St Thomas Norwich Church.  One of the main pillars of the STN Trust is to fight modern slavery and assist those who have been rescued from slavery by providing practical assistance and mentoring and befriending services.

Kerry Brighouse from the STN Trust said: “Ending slavery is central to the work of STN Trust. We care for victims who have suffered in circumstances of slavery through our mentoring and befriending scheme.  We also work to raise awareness about the issues of modern slavery and human trafficking in order that we might together prevent it from occurring in the first place.

“We are so encouraged by this innovative response to fighting modern slavery from some of the St Thomas Norwich family.  The funds they raise through the cookbook will enable to the Trust to continue it’s work of caring for individuals as well as fighting to end slavery.”

'Taste of Freedom: Eat Well and Fight Modern Slavery' can be purchased from the Mitre Café on Earlham Road, from the Sanctuary Coffee Stop on Grove Walk, or online at: stntrust.org/cookbook. There are limited copies.
