Norwich families benefit as tutor firm celebrates

Thousands of children across East Anglia have received a helping hand with their studies, thanks to one tutoring business that’s just marked a big milestone: 15 years of supporting learners to thrive.

Rob and Lynne Kerrison, the husband-and-wife team behind Tutor Doctor Norwich, first launched their tutoring business in Cambridge, in 2010. A decade later, in 2020, they expanded into Norwich and Norfolk, bringing their personalised, one-to-one tuition to even more local families and schools.

“After many years working in the corporate world, we both felt the pull to do something more meaningful,” said Rob. “Tutor Doctor was perfect for us – we’re helping young people unlock their potential.”

Since then, the pair have grown their team to over 200 tutors who cover everything from early literacy and maths to GCSE and A-Level preparation. They now deliver close to 20,000 hours of tutoring each year, supporting students both in their homes and in local schools.

What sets Tutor Doctor apart is the emphasis on building confidence, not just improving grades. “Seeing children start to believe in themselves is a really rewarding part of what we do,” explained Lynne.

Over the past few years, they’ve partnered with more than 50 schools and local authorities, including many in Norwich. Tutor Doctor Norwich are now fully accredited to provide their services directly to programmes instigated by Norfolk County Council for children out of school.

“We are hoping that more and more schools in Norfolk will also discover how beneficial Tutor Doctor’s support can be,” says Zosia Knight, who attends Gateway Vineyard Church, and supports Tutor Doctor’s growth here in Norfolk.

“We were thrilled to be appointed as one of very few tuition providers assigned to work with schools after COVID as part of the government’s National Tutoring Programme.  When the NTP funding ended, we knew it was important to keep finding ways to support the young people who needed it the most,” added Lynne.

Despite national success through their approach – recognised with a National Tutoring Award in 2023 (pictured above) – student outcomes remain the couple’s main motivation. For Rob: “We’ve always tried to be proactive and adapt. The education industry is constantly changing, so if there is a gap in support, we’ll look for a way to fill it. At the end of the day, that’s how we see our role – as partners to parents, schools and the wider community.”

While the business has grown and evolved over the past 15 years, Rob and Lynne’s mission has remained the same: to help every child discover their strengths and feel more confident in their learning.

“Fifteen years in, we still get very excited every time we see a student achieve something they didn’t think was possible,” said Lynne. “That moment when a child realises ‘I can do this’ is what keeps us motivated each and every day.”

“It’s such a privilege to be trusted by families and schools in Norwich and the surrounding areas,” added Rob. “Whether it’s helping a student get the grades they want or just feel happier about going to school, it’s all incredibly meaningful and rewarding!”
